KSD, I'm glad you stuck around, hope I wasn't too obtuse in my earlier posts.

I didn't think that at all. I've learned over the years that this type of medium often suffers due to a lack of tone, body language and voice inflections. If we were sitting around the table discussing the same topic it would be easier, but we make do with what we have. And call me David :D

Karronte brings up a good point and that is de-esculation techniques. As important as physical skills are, vocal are perhaps more important. I've been in more altercations than I care to remember, but I've avoided or de-esculated far more. One of the things I mention in class or seminars is the movie 'Tremors'. Anyone remember that movie with the underground giant worms? There was a great line in that movie when Vale and Earl are trapped on a giant boulder in the desert with the man-eating worm circling underneath. Earl says, 'We need to come up with a plan!' Vale says, 'I say we just run like hell!' Earl responds, 'Run....running isn't a plan...running is what you do when the plan fails!'

Same thing with using physical means to overcome someone, being physical isn't a the plan...it's what you do when the plan fails.

Tom
The complement was earned but you are welcome. Now to clarify, I am not critical of the LEO. I am in a very unique position to be in between the clinical world, the LEO, world and the Justice System world. I interact in all 3 realms and have to adapt from one to another sometimes in a days work. Today I accompany a team of Marshals to serve a High risk bench warrant, deposition in court for about 10 clients about mental health and substance abuse treatment compliance and then paid a visit to the forensic state hospital for a treatment meeting. Believe me I am not critical at all of the LEO. Well maybe of some in my county who are order to engage in this persecution of illegal immigrants and then simply generalize. All Latinos are illegal immigrants or so it would seem. Still even that is a reflection of the social system and political system which made a vote for the persecution to take place and to be enforced by the PD. What I am really critical is of the system that often dose not give them the tools they need, physical or intellectual and it only dose so when various bad things happen to go outside the box and look for alternatives to the establish perspective. The best example I use as an analogy, is the that in our area for a red light to be placed in a new intersection, 4 death need to occurred as a results of a traffic accident. So in general the price of a traffic light is the life of 4 individuals. See my point?

Ben we are going to PR this summer so start paking the bathingsuite :) ...

I didn't take it that you were being critical of LEO at all. I was just stating I understood your position and that most people have not walked in a LEO's shoes to understand but that does not excuse either side.

Hmmmm, never been to PR, might have to add it to the travel plans someday, headed to Seoul in May for some good training, seems I've spent more overseas time in Korea, India, Japan and China than places that are closer to me like PR, I'm in Texas so not difficult to get to the south....

Take care!!!

i am a psych nurse (only 5 years in) on a maximum classification psych program in a california prison in vacaville. as this is a psych unit, the patients/inmates are allowed to come out and watch tv without handcuffs. not saying the rest of the country isnt dangerous, but this is a ruff setup. the officers do not interfere with treatment, or assaultive behavior until someone is really hurt (as the director of the program wishes).

two weeks ago, an inmate tried to headbutt me. i gave him the textbook response.... a hammerlock and take down. HE ATTEMPTED AN ARMBAR as i transitioned to get on top of him. i stacked him, he proned and i regained control. as i restrained him, he attempted to bite me. thank master yang and helio gracie for the stand up and ground combo!

these guys condition all day and are fed 2800 calorie diets (with multi-v's upon request of their doctors). if they are in gangs, they train in vital stiking points, and apparently jiujitsu. lets not teach predators a more efficient method of pouncing. maybe qigong?

ATTEMPTED ARMBAR!
