KSD, I'm glad you stuck around, hope I wasn't too obtuse in my earlier posts.
I didn't think that at all. I've learned over the years that this type of medium often suffers due to a lack of tone, body language and voice inflections. If we were sitting around the table discussing the same topic it would be easier, but we make do with what we have. And call me David
Karronte brings up a good point and that is de-esculation techniques. As important as physical skills are, vocal are perhaps more important. I've been in more altercations than I care to remember, but I've avoided or de-esculated far more. One of the things I mention in class or seminars is the movie 'Tremors'. Anyone remember that movie with the underground giant worms? There was a great line in that movie when Vale and Earl are trapped on a giant boulder in the desert with the man-eating worm circling underneath. Earl says, 'We need to come up with a plan!' Vale says, 'I say we just run like hell!' Earl responds, 'Run....running isn't a plan...running is what you do when the plan fails!'
Same thing with using physical means to overcome someone, being physical isn't a the plan...it's what you do when the plan fails.
